June Newsletter
Battle of the Sexes Tournament - May 31st
The seventh annual Female Gamer Appreciation Month has been a huge hit as always. As May comes to a close, our celebration of the fairer gamer will culminate on Sunday with the Battle of the Sexes Tournament. This is our second year doing this exciting tournament. It is an all day event running from opening at 10 AM and lasting through 10 PM that night. Every game played in the store can count for the tournament.

Scoring is simple. At the end of each game, each player earns points for their team equal to the number of players of the other team that they bested plus one times one point per quarter hour spent playing the game. Thus, this time, the more players that a team has the more of an advantage they will have, so make sure to bring everyone you can!

Last year's Tournament was a tie. This year, let's have a clear winner!

Board Game League
For a while now, Worlds Apart has been running a series of Magic Leagues which have been very popular. They have been so well appreciated that the board gamers desire a league of their own, and, starting June 21st, they shall have it!

The rules of the league are modeled on the rules of the Battle of the Sexes Tournament. Anyone can sign up for the league for free. Any qualified game is worth a number of points equal to the number of players you beat plus one times one point per quarter hour the game takes.

To make sure there is diversity, you cannot play the same game twice in the same day for points, nor can you play with the exact same group of people during the same day.

Additionally, to encourage a great variety of games, you will get a bonus of three points for each different game you play during the the league.

The league will run from June 21st to July 26th. Prizes will be provided to the winner. For more details and official rules, come by the store in about a week when I get around to writing them up and posting them.

Taste of Amherst - June 18-21
Worlds Apart is proud to be a part of the 18th Annual Taste of Amherst, running on the Amherst Town Common June 18th to 21st. While games are very tasty, Worlds Apart is not a restaurant, so we will not be vending at the Taste. Rather, we will have the wonderful opportunity to set up a tent where we will demo all kinds of quick and easy to learn games to help the people of Amherst develop a healthy appreciation for games. They will have so much fun that they will then head over to the store and try some more involved games.

We need your help to make this endeavor a success. We need outgoing people willing to play games like Bananagrams, Fluxx, Set, and Rock with people at the Taste. The more people we have under the tent, the more people we can introduce to the awesomeness that is gaming. We also need people to hang out at the store and play games with those who wander by during the Taste.

In other words, we need you to come to Amherst and play games as much as you can during the four days of the Taste. Who said helping out the community was difficult?

If you are interested in helping out for any part of the weekend, please email Michael at gm@pvgaming.org

Trivia Contest
After the Taste ends at 4:00 on Sunday, we'll be bringing everyone back to the store for an evening of games and good times.

At 6:00 PM, Mel Gavazzi is organizing a geek trivia contest including questions on media, geek lit, culture, and, of course, games. Prizes will be provided to the winner as a token of our appreciation of their trivial brilliance. Entry to the contest is free.

Security Overnight Gaming
At the end of the Taste, we have a really cool opportunity which I think you all will appreciate. We have the chance to game on the Amherst Town Common all night long!

The Amherst Chamber Commerce has asked us for our assistance in a way in which we are uniquely qualified. After the Taste is over, they need someone to stay awake on the Common keep an eye on things on Sunday night to make sure that no one tries to make off with a tent or soda cooler.

Thus, we will game all night on the Common to keep the Taste equipment safe until morning. We are still working on exactly what we will play, but there are definitely plans for a game of Arkham Horror as well as a fatigue-fueled dimension-hopping RPG.

If you are interested in participating, please contact Michael at gm@pvgaming.org

MUCH MAGIC THIS MONTH
Special Magic event the First:
Jesus, one of our regulars at the store, is running a free sealed deck tournament, Sunday, February 1st at 1 PM. Players will receive 5 25 card packs, each containing 2 rares, plus assorted uncommons and commons. From these 125 cards, they build a sealed deck and compete in the tournament. Players may keep their cards. These are vintage cards ranging from Ice Age to Time Spiral. Jesus will accept donations, and all donations go to helping a public forum. For more details, email Jesus at gpublicforum@hotmail.com.

Special Magic event the Second:
Conflux is coming! The Conflux Launch Party will be happening at 1pm on Sunday, February 8th. All attendees will receive a promotional foil from the new set. The launch party is a sealed deck tournament, prizes include booster packs and MTG playmats.

Special Magic event the Third:
The Magic: the Gathering Sealed league is back! This time, the league will feature the newest M:TG set, Conflux! The league will be running from February 15th through March 14th. Players may join at any time. A League launch Sealed Deck Tournament will be held on February 15th at 1pm. Both the tournament and the league will have prize support as well as promotional foils available for participants.

DOMINION TOURNAMENT 2/29/09
Dominion is an amazingly awesome card game. Board Game Geek describes it this way:
“Dominion is not a CCG, but the play of the game is similar to the construction and play of a CCG deck. The game comes complete with roughly 500 cards. You select 10 of the 25 Kingdom card types to include in any given play -- leading to immense variety.”
http://www.boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/36218-Dominion

This game has been a huge hit since we opened the demo. Not only is it a great, simple strategy game, but it is playable in 15-30 minutes. It being so awesome, we must have a tournament to determine who dominates Dominion.

What better time to dominate than the first anniversary of Worlds Apart Games? It was February 29th, 2008 when Worlds Apart celebrated it's grand opening. The tournament will take place at 6:00 PM on Sunday, February 29th, 2009. (One of the benefits of Worlds Apart membership is the existence of a leap day every year. Non-members may attend the tournament on March 1st.)

The tournament is FREE!

MAULCON
The Pioneer Valley shall once again have a gaming convention for the ages. NexusCorp is renting out the store front at the Hampshire Mall which once contained Steve and Barry's. For RPGs, we a have a wide variety of RPGs run by local GMs including some exciting independent games written by local authors.

For Board Games, we will have many, many board games available, including the Worlds Apart Games demo library. Got a good board game library yourself? Bring it with to share and get $5 off admission!

After hours, Laser Storm has been kind enough to host a laser tag tournament exclusively for MaulCon attendees. The laser tag tournament will have an additional charge.

Additionally, X-9, our friendly game store neighbor in the Mall, will be hosting great Magic events during the weekend.

Admission is $15 at the door and $10 pre-registration. Pre-registration is available at Worlds Apart and online at https://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/55072

January 2009 Newsletter
In this newsletter:
-NEW YEAR'S EVE PARTY
-MAGIC LEAGUE
-INDIE GAME NIGHT
-J-TERM TRIVIA

Another year has come and gone, and what a year it has been. This year started for us with the first sparks of a new idea, that of a new way to run a game store. 2008 has been a very exciting year for the Worlds Apart community, as we watched this dream blossom into a full fledged, sustainable enterprise. We're not perfect, but we have certainly made it through the first year, and the second year ahead is looking pretty good as well.

As always, we have some very exciting happenings down at Worlds Apart. New Year's Eve we will be maintaining another Phoenix tradition, the New Year's Eve Party. The December Monthly Magic League was a huge success and we look forward to the start of the next one in two weeks. Michael Moceri has approached us about running an Indie Game Night. Last, but not least, you will have the chance to win a $50 gift certificate by proving your mind superior in the 100 question J-Term Trivia Challenge.

-NEW YEAR'S EVE PARTY
This year, the great tradition of game store New Year's Eve parties continues. We will have games, food, fun, and a big backwards counting clock which should hit 0 at midnight if we can master the math. There will also be playing the special party LARP, Escape from the SS Hubris, in which players play crew trying to evacuate a crazy assortment of passengers from the sinking starship.

This will be the ultimate party of the year. Don't miss it!

-MAGIC LEAGUE
The first Worlds Apart Magic League was a huge success. We have many players playing lots of games of Magic every day of the week. Prizes will be based on who has the most points at the end of the month: 2 points for each win, 1 point for each loss.

Sad that you missed out on this month's league. No problem. There will be another league next month. January 11th, join us for the kick-off sealed tournament at 1:00 PM.

How much fun is the league? Well, it's so much fun that it took me four hours to write this newsletter because I kept playing league games rather than finishing the newsletter. Join the fun.

-INDIE GAME NIGHT
There are a lot of great independent game designers, some of whom can be found right here in the Pioneer Valley. Michael Moceri has approached us about the idea of having a regular Indie Game Night. While this event is still in the planning stages, it will probably take place on Wednesday evenings. You can find discussion of this exciting new event on the forums at http://worldsapartgames.com/discuss/index.php?topic=388.0

-J-TERM TRIVIA
If you are a student at one of the Five Colleges, then you probably know about J-Term or Winter Session classes. It's a way to expand your mind during the winter. At Worlds Apart, we are looking to stretch your mind as well, or at least put it through the wringer. On January 1st, we'll be sending out a 100 question trivia challenge. The first person to successfully answer all 100 questions will earn a $50 gift certificate. Unlike in school, you are allowed to work in groups, but you must split the prize.

You are welcome to send in the challenge as many times as you like. We will correct it and let you know which questions you got wrong. Be aware that it may be a few days before you get your corrected answers back. Of course, we won't tell you the right answers until someone has won, but you can keep trying until you get them all right.

Happy New Year!

WorldsWiki And Forums
Worlds Apart has two great apps on the Internet.

There is the WorldsWiki, which is a wiki of Pioneer Valley fannish information and history. It's a great place to get a feel for the history of fandom in the area or to share your historical knowledge with the masses.

The Wiki is at http://www.pvgaming.org/wiki

The Worlds Apart Forums are our online community space. We do talk about everything from new games to stories from the store to politics, religion, sex, and other things you should not talk about in polite company.

The Forums are at http://www.worldsapartgames.org/discuss

Our Friends in Fandom
Part of the mission of Worlds Apart is to connect people in fandom together. To that end, please allow me to introduce one of our friends in fandom:

PHOENIX SWORDS
Phoenix Swords is a team of entertainers who perform sword fights, stage acts, fire acts, games and puppetry at Ren Faires and all kinds of other great events from Florida to Ontario.

Our friends at Phoenix Swords are looking for a few good men and women to join their merry band. This job does not pay the big bucks, but it will give you a chance to train with some of the best sword instructors in the country. It's not easy work, and it takes a lot of training to get involved, but to train with the best and travel all over the eastern seaboard performing for adoring crowds

For more information on joining, visit http://www.phoenixswords.com/jobs/
